Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 within Long Beach California. DuVernay grew up with her Aunt Denise she urged DuVernay to be creative and inspired by art. She was a night nurse, allowing her aunt to have the time she required during the day to indulge in writing, theatre and literature. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay realized through the example of her mother that art could be an avenue for action. DuVernay was raised by her mother who was well-informed and taught her how she could use the arts to find a way to express herself. DuVernay was born with her family in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences was the Civil Rights marches that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the local town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma was the inspiration she used to make a film about The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a high school diploma in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at an institution called the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with degrees in English and African American studies. When she was still studying, DuVernay became interested in producing for the broadcast media. DuVernay was a journalist intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being given the task of watching the family home, and then looking through the rubbish of one members of the juries. She was disappointed by her journalism tasks and decided to move into the public relations industry. DuVernay started her first job as a publicity specialist in an unassuming production studio after graduating from college. In 1999, she established her own business of public relations, called The DuVernay Agency. Additionally, she launched several lifestyle and promotional networks for the urban beauty industry, including the Urban Beauty Collective.
